5 tips for preparing for your in-home newborn photography session

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a magical time, and capturing those first moments with beautiful photos is something you will cherish forever. If you’ve booked an in-home newborn session with a Plymouth newborn photographer or a Minneapolis newborn photographer, you want to make sure everything goes smoothly. Preparing well can help you feel relaxed and confident, so your newborn photos turn out just as you imagined. Here are five practical tips to get ready for your in-home newborn photos.

My in-home newborn sessions include props like baskets and cribs, wraps, bonnets, etc.

1. Choose the Best Time for Your Newborn Session

Timing matters a lot for newborn photos. The best age for newborn photos is usually between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies tend to sleep deeply and curl up naturally, which makes posing easier and more comfortable for them. If you wait too long, your baby might become more alert and less likely to stay still.

Schedule your session early, ideally before your baby arrives, so you can book a date within that window. Send me a message to check my availability, I'll help with all of the details for planning.

2. Prepare Your Home for the Newborn Photo Session

Since this is an in-home newborn session, your space becomes the studio. You want to create a calm, clean, and comfortable environment. Here are some tips:

  • Pick a room with plenty of natural light. Soft, indirect sunlight works best for newborn photos. If it's a cloudy day, I bring lighting with me, so one less thing to stress about.

  • Clear clutter and tidy up. A neat space keeps the focus on your baby and makes the photos look timeless.

  • Set the temperature comfortably warm. Newborns are sensitive to cold, so keep the room cozy to help your baby stay calm and sleepy.

  • No need to have outfits, blankets or props! I bring everything with me.

3. Select the Right Newborn Photo Outfit

Choosing what your baby will wear is an exciting part of preparing for the session. Many parents prefer simple, soft fabrics in neutral or pastel colors that won’t distract from their baby’s natural beauty. Avoid busy patterns or bright colors that might take attention away from your baby’s face.

4. Plan for Feeding and Comfort Breaks

Newborn sessions can take a few hours because your baby will need breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and comforting. Planning ahead will help the session flow smoothly:

  • Feed your baby right before the session starts to encourage sleepiness.

  • Have burp cloths, diapers, and wipes nearby for quick changes.

  • Keep a pacifier or soothing items handy if your baby uses them.

  • Stay relaxed and patient. Your calm energy will help your baby feel safe.

I will guide you through the process and take breaks as needed. Remember, the goal is to capture natural, peaceful moments, not to rush through the session.

5. Communicate Your Vision with Your Photographer

Every family has a unique style and vision for their newborn photos. Before the session, I'll help get an idea of what types of photos you're looking for.

  • Do you prefer posed or candid shots?

  • Are there specific family members or siblings to include?

  • Do you want certain props or themes?

  • What kind of lighting and backgrounds do you like?
